One thing you’ll notice with a lot of corporate managers is that they write emails for CMB or “cover my butt” purposes. They want a written record that they sent you what they committed to or that you agreed to something. This way, they can always blame someone else or defend themselves if something goes wrong. I’m not a big fan of this because I think trust is more important than this sort of legal speak. If a relationship erodes emotionally, no amount of record-keeping will rectify the situation. I say the same thing about contracts: if your customers feel cheated, it doesn’t really matter what the contract says. So just keep in mind that the emotional ramifications of what you’re doing may matter more than protecting yourself from blame.
